I have read several children’s Bibles and poured through hundreds of reviews searching for a good one for my 2.5 year old son. This one is great for his comprehension/attention level (one of the main reasons our other Bibles weren’t working for us) and I had high hopes for content based on the good reviews. However, I was very disappointed to find almost no mention of sin or need for a savior. The Old Testament stories do not point at all to Jesus or a need for him. The promise made to Abraham’s family is just about getting land and many children. There is no mention about God’s intention to save the world through his offspring. The story of the garden of Eden does not mention that people will now have to die or have anything to be saved from, Adam and Eve are just banished from the garden as punishment for eating the fruit. The word Savior finally appears in the nativity story, but with no mention of what people need saving from. It might seem picky, but it breaks my heart that so many adults grew up in church with the same lack of explanation of why we need Jesus, and consequently don’t think they need him, that it’s just a nice idea but irrelevant to their lives, so it is crucial to me that my children and others don’t miss the most important message of the Bible- the Gospel. I figured there would at least be some explanation during the Easter story, but it simply says Jesus died, and then that he rose, with no mention at all of why that is important. I really wanted to like this Bible (and was willing to overlook the cartoony illustrations), but it is pretty much just a collection of simplistic stories about people from the Bible with very little connection to God or explanation of who Jesus is aside from some nice guy who taught people nice things for some unknown reason.
